Sophocles (c. 497 – c. 406 BC)

Sophocles was a ancient Greek tragedian. He was from Hippeios Colonus in Attica. He was from a wealthy family and was highly educated. He wrote 120 plays during his lifetime, but only seven survived in complete form. The Oedipus Cycle Ajax Electra The Trachiniae Deianeira, the wife of Heracles, is concerned over her husband's neglect of her family. She sends Hyllus, their son, to locate Heracles. Heracles falls in love with a young woman named Iole. Eariler, Heracles killed Nessus when it grabbed for Deianeira. Nessus, before it died, gave Deianeira some of his blood as a love potion. Deianeira used it on Heracles which posioned him. Heracles was carried off to be burned alive because he was in so much pain. Philoctetes
