SCENE II FADE IN EXT. HICKORY, MISSISSIPPI - NIGHT At the recruiting camp near the Chunky River, the Indians discuss the coming War. Rumor among them says that they are ordered to near Lake Ponchatrain, putting them in close proxmitity with Union held New Orleans. Slowly, campfires grow dim. Meanwhile, 30 miles east of the Chunky River is Meridian Station. There, the engine Hercules and its four cars await the boarding of passengers to Vicksburg. The passengers are mostly soldiers. There are a few civilians. At day break, shouting in the distance awakes the slumbering camp. A YOUNG UNNAMED SOLDIER Help! Our train has crashed into the river.! Men are dying this instant!
